Périgord, komt ongeveer overeen met het departement Dordogne .  In de 5de eeuw kwam het gebied onder de heerschappij van de Goten, in 507 onder die van de Franken. Onder de Merovingen werd het een graafschap. Het gebied maakte deel uit van Guyenne en verviel door het huwelijk van Eleonora van Aquitanië met Hendrik II Plantagenet aan Engeland. Tijdens de Honderdjarige Oorlog had het gebied erg te lijden. In 1454 kwam het aan het Huis Albret. In 1589 werd het door Hendrik IV met de Franse Kroon verenigd.

The former province of the PERIGORD
Is now known as the Dordogne. Between Paris and Pyrenees, midway between Pole and Equator, the region is crossed by the Transeuropean road ans the 45th parallel. Its location gives it a particulary mild climate, pleasant in all seasons.

The four keys of the Perigord of Dordogne
The PERIGORD BLANC, pays de Périgueux et Vallée de l'Isle, is a region of limestone plateaux, wide valleys and rolling meadows crossed by the rivers Auvézère and Isle.
From Hautefort to Montpon
Including the county town of Périgueux, the region also features towns of interest such as Savignac-les-Eglises, Sorges with its truffles, Saint-Astier, Neuvic and Mussidan.
PERIGORD VERT
To the north, the  pays du Nontronnais du Val de Dronne, with its Natural Park Regional Périgord -Limousin, offers a greenery of verdant growth and valleys in a region crossed by a myriad of rivers and streams.
The Dronne, the Bandiat, the high valleys of the rivers Isle and Auvézère stretch from Lanouaille to La Roche-Chalais, encompassing Nontron, Brantôme, Bourdeilles and Ribérac.

Downstream Dordogne discover the pays du grand Bergeracois et des Bastides, a new appellation strictly contrôlée in the region of Bergerac.

The pays du sarladais et de la Vézère overlooks the valleys of the Vézère and the Dordogne. These timeless, breathtaking landscapes have been handed down from Prehistory.
