Saint-Étienne is hoofdstad van het departement Loire in het oosten van het Massif Central, aan de Furens.
Er zijn Hogescholen voor mijnbouw en voor muziek en toneel. Maison de la Culture is uit 1969. Er is verder het Museum voor hedendaagse kunst.
Vanaf de 15de eeuw heeft de stad een snelle ontwikkeling doorgemaakt, vanwege o.a. steenkooltransport naar omliggende plaatsen en de komst van de eerste staalfabriek in Frankrijk.
Mogelijkheden voor een stadsbezoek zijn: Het museum van Moderne Kunst; Het Mijnmuseum; Museum voor Kunst en Industrie; Museum Georges Stephenson; Memoriaal van de verzetsbeweging; Het Planetarium en Het stadion Geoffroy Guichard, oprichter van de Casino winkels.
Omgeving
Op 15 km van Saint-Etienne ligt Saint-Victor-sur-Loire met de Middeleeuwse versterkte burcht en een mooie Romaanse kerk.
Het dorp Rochetaillée domineert met haar kasteel de indrukwekkende vallei van de Furan met de twee stuwdammen Pas de Riot en Gouffre de l'Enfer. Ligt aan de ingang van het Regionale Natuurpark van Pilat of Parc Naturel Régional du Pilat, op 5 km zuidelijk van Saint-Etienne. Rochetaillée is het vertrekpunt voor wandeltochten.

In the south,
Pilat regional nature park offers preserved landscapes along 800 km of pedestrian paths, 650 km of mountain bike routes and 450 km of bridlepaths.
In the west, the Forez Mountains rise until they reach the Hautes-Chaumes, which peaks at Pierre sur Haute at a height of 1,634 m.
In the north,
the Côte Roannaise at the foot of the Madeleine Mountains, which is the northern continuation of the Forez Mountains with 250 km of pedestrian and mountain bike paths and bridlepaths.
To the east
are the Matin Mountains, the last spur of the Massif Central, a region with strong farming and textile traditions, with over 1000 km of marked paths stretching from the banks of the Loire to the ridges of the Lyonnais Mountains.
