Belluno (a name of Celtic origin that
means "splendid, illuminated city") rises over a promontory located
near the confluence of the Ardo River to the Piave River. It stands in a
beautiful frame made of the Dolomites on the north side and the Venete Pre
Alps in the south side. A city that offers artistic and natural beauties and
can be appreciated by everybody. The attraction of Belluno is the tranquility
of its streets, where people can stroll and stop to chat with others; in the
beautiful squares, all of them characterized by a pure and fresh water
fountain; in the sky colors; in its splendid panorama which allows you to look
all the way to the Belluna Valley, the Dolomite peaks of Schiara, Pelf and
Gusčla del Vescovą Mountains. Belluno is a city located in an untouched
valley, a city that is just a few minutes from mountain paths and wood trails.
Places that always surprise you with emotions and impressions. A place that,
as described by the writer Dino Buzzati, has "a special personality which
gives it an extraordinary enchantment but that unfortunately only a few are
able to appreciate it." A place where "the venetian world (with its
serenity, the classic harmony of lines, the ancient elegance and its
unmistakable architectural beauties) merges with the northern world (with its
mysterious mountains, long winters, fables, wood spirits, that feeling of
solitude, legend, and remoteness)".
Feltre Accessibility
Feltre has it roots in a mythical and
glorious past. It used to be a retic center during the years that proceeded
our era. It became a Roman city hall during the first half of the first
century BC. After that, it went under the Longobard domination, the power of
the Count Bishop, the presence of many landlords of Veneto and finally under
the Venetian Serenissima domination. Despite all of the troubles that the city
went through (in particular, the robbery and the fires that took place during
the first years of the XVI century) this little town located in the high
Veneto region, still holds claim to many exceptionally beautiful monuments and
remains. The old town, which surrounds the five hundred year old Piazza
Maggiore, with its renaissance buildings, the old theater, the Coat of Arms
Hall, the Alboino castle. From here, many roads and tiny streets begin where
we can find beautiful frescoes, buildings, elegant double lancet windows,
seats made of engraved stones and views which bring us back to ancient and
almost forgotten times. And how should we talk about the wonderful Rizzarda
museum, one of the major ancient examples of wrought iron? Once you'll leave
the hill through one of its precious ancient doors (Porta Imperiale, Port'Oria
or Porta Pusterla), one shouldn't miss the opportunity to visit the
archeological area located under the Dome parvis. Recently it has been opened
to the public and it shows lots of roman and medieval pieces of work of great
interest. Maybe, just one day wouldn't be enough to appreciate the beauties of
the mythical Feltria, but one of the places that anybody should absolutely
visit is the one thousand year old Sanctuary of S.S. Vittore and Corona, an
authentic jewelry piece of the roman art influenced by Byzantine culture. This
Sanctuary was an important center of pilgrimage during the past and that
finally now a day is regaining its fame after the recent restoration works.
