BRAGANÇA, naar overzicht Porto e Norte de Portugal

Ligt aan de rand van de Serra de Nogueira. De middeleeuwse burcht overheerst de stad. In de 12de eeuw is men met de bouw van de stad begonnen. Een gekanteelde muur met 18 torens werd rondom de burcht gebouwd. Er binnen in staan een aantal witte huizen die overheerst worden door de donjon van het paleis. Het was het stamslot van de Bragança’s die eeuwen in Bragança regeerden maar hier niet gewoond hebben. Dat deden ze in Vila Viçosa, een groot landgoed in Alentejo. De vesting is volledig bewaard. Nu is er een militair museum in.

Santa Maria do Castelo
Deze kerk heeft een renaissance portaal met een cassentenlijst en gedraaide zuilen. De vier ramen zijn schelpvormig.
De Domus Municipalis, een klein stadhuis uit de 13de eeuw,  ligt nu achter de kerk het is een granieten gebouw met een vijfhoek als plattegrond.
Naast het kasteel staat een schandpaal, pelourinho, op een sokkel in de vorm van een granieten everzwijn.
Over de muren, richting Spanje kijkend ziet men het Parque Natural de Montezinho liggen.
De citadel afdalend ligt rechts de mooie São Bento kerk . Het is in renaissance stijl gebouwd in de 16de eeuw. In het vroegere bisschoppelijke paleis is nu het Museu do Abade de Baçal gevestigd. Er is een prehistorische verzameling en een kunstcollectie te zien.

Bragança
Bragança is an imposing city situated in the north-east region of Trás-os-Montes. Its old part - the citadel encircled by walls - still retains its essentially mediaeval atmosphere, where the most notable buildings are the castle keep (Torre de Menagem), the Princess´s Tower (Torre da Princesa), and the town-hall (Domus Municipalis, a unique example in the Iberian Peninsula of fifteenth-century Romanesque civil architecture) and the highly typical pillory, whose base consists of a stone sculpture in the shape of a pig and is undoubtedly connected with Celtic fertility rites.
Bragança is also the name of a duchy, to which the kings of the last Portuguese dynasty belonged.
Between Bragança and the Spanish border lies the Montesinho Natural Park, one of the wildest regions in Europe, where there are various small communal villages that still maintain many of their old ancestral customs. The most peculiar example is Rio de Onor, a village that is divided down the middle by the border between Portugal and Spain.

The park consists of a series of hills and deep valleys. An important area for fauna (birds and the Iberian wolf) and flora. Archaeological remains in many of the villages and socio-cultural heritage of great importance. It lies in the municipalities of Montesinho and Vinhais, covering the Serra de Montesinho and the Serra de Coroa. The rivers Sabor, Baceiro, Onor and Tuela flow through the park.
