ELVAS Ligt
in Alto, hoog, Alentejo en wel aan de weg van Madrid naar Lissabon, vlak
bij de Portugees/Spaanse grens. Het is altijd een vestingstad geweest.
Verdedigingswerken en stadswallen omgeven het oude centrum. Lang zijn de
Moren er de baas geweest. Pas in 1226 wist Sancho II de stad op de Moren
te veroveren.Door de witte huizen, het smeedwerk, veranda's en open schoorstenen staand aan kleine straatjes doet de stad nog steeds Moors aan. Aqueduto da Amoreira Is een formidabel aquaduct met vier verdiepingen, 800 bogen en 31 m hoog. Functioneert nog steeds. Sé Velha Is uit de 16e eeuw. De façade is in de 18e eeuw toegevoegd. In de kerk zijn veel azuleos aangebracht. Het plafond van de driebeukige kerk is goudkleurig. Het koor is geheel met marmer bekleed. Igreja da Nossa Senhora da Consolação Is een kloosterkerk uit de 16e eeuw, gebouwd op een achthoekig grondplan. De koepel is bedekt met blauwe en gele azuleos en wordt gedragen door acht koepels. Castelo Is door de Moren gebouwd op Romeinse fundamenten. Mooi is het uitzicht vanaf de donjon en de wallen. Igreja de São Domingos Dit is een gotische kerk uit de 13e eeuw. Museu Arqueológico Tomás Ligt in Largo do Colégio, heeft een mooi portaal en laat archeologische vondsten zien uit Alto Alentejo en keramiek en beeldhouwkunst uit 13e - 16e eeuw. In de Igreja de Senhor Jesus da Piedade vlak bij het aquaduct zien we veel votief geschenken. Dit is een bedevaartskerk. In september worden er een week lang processies gehouden en een jaarmarkt. The walled city, together with the Forte de Santa Luzia and the Forte da Graça, forms an impressive line of defence that proved extremely important during the War of Restoration fought against Spain in 1640. Another interesting part of the city´s defensive structure consists of some small fortifications built at the beginning of the nineteenth century, between 1810 and 1812, during the French invasions. These are: the Fortim de São Pedro, the Fortim de São Mamede, the Fortim da Piedade and the Fortim de São Francisco.
