Ligt aan de monding (=foz), van de Rio Mondego. Het is een industriestad met een belanrijke haven. Het is een druk bezochte badplaats omdat het een lang en breed strand heeft. Het strand begint bij de monding van de Mondego en loopt tot de Buarcos, een vissersdorp. Buarcos is bekend om zijn sardinevangst. Hier staan nog twee schandpalen uit de 16de eeuw.
De visserij bestaat uit sardines en kabeljauw, verder is er scheepsbouw en in het zuiden wordt rijst verbouwd.
In het Dr. Santos Rocha Municipal Museum, in het stadspark aan de Rua Calouste Gulbenkian, is een afdeling archeologie met vondsten uit het  Stenen Tijdperk en uit de Romeinse periode. Verder ziet men er keramiek en tapijten. Toegang is vrij.
Casa do Paço, een 17de eeuws paleis, is versierd met duizenden Delftsblauwe tegels, afkomstig van een gestrandschip. Vroeger was het een raadhuis.

Summer resort on the mouth of the Mondego river (long, sandy beaches and water sports facilities). Special mention to the mother-church, Casa do Paço (17th century), Municipal Museum, Santa Catarina Fortress (16th century) and Pelourinho.
Figueira da Foz took its name from its situation at the mouth (foz) of the River Mondego and it has developed into one of the main seaside resorts in the centre of Portugal. A cosmopolitan and lively city, it first began to gain in importance towards the end of the nineteenth century when "bathing in Figueira" was to become a popular pastime amongst the aristocracy of the central region.
Figueira da Foz
has a vast range of different kinds of accommodation for visitors, a casino that was founded in 1900 and an excellent beach providing ideal conditions for all kinds of water sports, with both sailing and powerboat championships being held here.
The beach has the most extensive stretch of sand in the whole of mainland Portugal and every July the World Beach Football Championships are held here, an event that continues to attract more and more spectators every year.
Other highlights in the city´s annual programme of events are the International Film Festival, a pioneering event in Portugal, and the International Gala of Child Singers.
In the surrounding area,
it is well worth taking a trip to the top of the Serra da Boa Viagem to appreciate the panoramic view from the Miradouro da Vela. From here, one can see not only the city and the salt-pans of the River Mondego, but on clear days the coastline is also visible as far as the Berlengas islands.
