Ligt in de voormalige provincie Beira Alta. Het is de hoogst gelegen, 1060 m, stad van Portugal. Het is lang de sterkste vesting geweest in de strijd tegen Léon. Al in de tijd van de Romeinen beschermde de stad de in de omgeving wonende Lusitaniërs. In de 1e eeuw is het verval ingezet. Pas in de strijd tegen de Moren en de Castilianen zag Sancho I het belang van Guarda in. We zitten dan in de 12e eeuw.
Kathedraal
Is drieschepig en heeft een dwarsschip in kruisvorm. Is opgetrokken uit marmer. Interessant is het gotische portaal aan de linkerzijbeuk.  In het interieur moet men de retabel bewonderen met meer dan honderd figuren uit het leven van Christus en Maria. In het transept voert een trap naar het terras. Vanaf hier heeft men een mooi uitzicht op de stad, op de burcht met de wallen en op het belfort.
Men kan van Praça Luis de Camões naar het belfort  en de drie stadspoorten wandelen. Het is het enige wat nog over is van de verdedigingswerken uit de 12e eeuw.
De Misericórdia kerk is een barokke kerk. In het Museu Regional ziet men veel van de geschiedenis van de stad. Veel azuleos zijn er te zien in de São Vincente uit de 18e eeuw. 
Omgeving
Van hier uit kan men goed tochten maken door het natuurreservaat Serra da Estrela. In Pinhel zijn nog verdedigingswerken, zoals wallen, poorten en ruïnes van het kasteel van Dinis te zien.

Guarda
The walls, the Towers, the old Jewish quarter and the houses of Dom João I and Barbadão call to mind the days of the medieval splendour. The Cathedral, Gothic in its origins, displays a Manueline portal and window as well as a Renaissance retable. Also deserving a visit are the churches of Senhora dos Remédios (16th century), Misericórdia (17th century), and São Vicente (18th century), and the Regional Museum. On the outskirts the Romanesque hermitage of Nossa Senhora de Mileu (11th-12th centuries).
D. Sancho I
Guarda was founded in the twelfth century by D. Sancho I, the poet king who sang fondly of the city in his mediaeval cantigas de amigo. There is, in particular, one very famous verse in which a lady laments the belated arrival of her beloved saying "my friend has been kept so very late in Guarda".
Close to the Serra da Estrela
By virtue of its being the highest city in Portugal (at an altitude of 1,056 metres) and situated close to the mountains of the Serra da Estrela and the border with Spain, Guarda has, as its name suggests, always played a major defensive role in watching over the borderland at the far reaches of Portuguese territory.
In the thirteenth century, when the episcopal seat of Egitânia (Idanha-a-Velha) was transferred to Guarda, the city´s importance was confirmed by the Portuguese kings and it embarked upon a period of rapid development.
Historical centre
Guarda´s historical centre still retains much of the atmosphere of mediaeval times, clearly visible in its numerous granite buildings, some sections of the old city walls, the castle keep and the cathedral, which took around 150 years to build (from the fourteenth to the sixteenth century) and consequently exhibits a variety of architectural styles.
Here visitors
will also find the city´s Jewish quarter, close to the castle walls and the Porta d´El-Rei gateway, consisting of a series of two-storey houses that belonged to the royal exchequer. It was here that the Jews who were expelled from Spain in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries came to settle, paying the king a rent for the use of these buildings and greatly contributing to the city´s commercial development.
In the surrounding area
visitors are also strongly encouraged to see the Ermida de Nossa Senhora de Mileu (a chapel dating from the eleventh and twelfth centuries) and the old Iron Age forts of Tintinolho and Jarmelo.
