Ligt in de streek Estremadura, een deel van de Regio Lisboa e Vale do Tejo. Het is een vissershaven en een badplaats. Ligt aan een baai die beschut wordt door de Serra da Arrábida.
De Rua da Esperança  vlak bij Forte de São Teodosio loopt van de boulevard omhoog  naar de parochiekerk met een klokkentoren en een mooie preekstoel. Deze straat en de zijstraten worden tijdens de Romaria do Senhor Jesus, begin mei, veelkleurig versierd.

Castelo de Sesimbra is gerestaureerd en ligt 3 km noordwestelijk van de stad. en het binnenkomen van de vissersvloot. Binnen de muren staat de Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Castelo uit de 12e eeuw. Vanaf het kasteel heeft men een mooi uitzicht over de baai van de Rio Sado en de Serra da Arrábida.
Omgeving
De N 379 loopt vanaf Santana naar de uiterste punt van het schiereiland, de Cabo Espichel. Deze steekt ver boven de zeespiegel uit. Het is vanouds een pelgrimsoord. Om het grote kerkplein staan pelgrimshuizen met bogengalerijen uit de 18e eeuw.
Tussen Sesimbra en Setúbal ligt het natuurpark Parque Natural du Arrábida. Je kunt hier goed wandelen. Op de zuidflank groeien cipressen, steeneiken en eucalyptusbomen.

Sesimbra, a picturesque fishing town set in a sheltered bay, was founded on the hilltop around the Moorish castle that Dom Afonso Henriques (the first King of Portugal) captured in 1165. This castle fell back into Moorish hands in 1191, and was recaptured in the reign of Dom Sancho I (13th century), who donated it to the Order of São Tiago (St. James) for defence and settlement.
It was restored in the 18th century,
and is now an essential place to visit for admiring a truly marvellous view of the town and the sea.
Sesimbra´s wealth of seafood persuaded the population to go down the hill and explore the neighbourhood, turning this town into one of the region´s main fishing ports.
It was the sea, too, that during the 20th century has attracted outsiders in search of the excellent sheltered beaches with prime conditions for water sports, making this peaceful place a busy summer resort. In the surrounding area, the Sanctuary of N.S. do Cabo Espichel is worth a visit, and on the cliff next to it one can see dinosaur footprints.
The excellent local cuisine, specialising in shellfish and fresh fish, deserves a special mention, and this can be sampled in the numerous local restaurants.
