Namibië ligt in zuidwest-Afrika. langs de kust ligt de Namibwoestijn, in het binnenland een plateau met toppen hoger dan 2000 meter, en in het zuidoosten uitlopers van de Kalahari-woestijn. Het Duitse koloniale verleden heeft opmerkelijke sporen achtergelaten in Namibië, bijvoorbeeld in het kustplaatsje Swakopmund, waar nog oorspronkelijke Duitse vakwerkhuizen te vinden zijn. De voertaal is Engels. Men spreekt er ook wel Duits en Zuid-Afrikaans.
Hoogtepunten
Fish River Canyon: in het zuiden van Namibië ligt deze 27 km brede en 160 km lange canyon.
Sossusvlei: is bekend vanwege de hoge, grillige zandduinen.
Namib Naukluft Park: omvat de 130 miljoen jaar oude Namibwoestijn
Swakopmund: kustplaatsje met sporen uit het Duitse koloniale verleden.
Skeleton Coast: een ongeschonden kustlandschap dat zijn naam heeft te danken aan de vele schepen die hier in het verleden door dichte mist zijn vergaan.
Etosba National Park: met een oppervlakte van 22.270 vierkante kilometer het grootste (en volgens velen het allermooiste wildpark in Afrika.
Klimaat en kleding
In Namibië schijnt de zon gemiddeld 300 dagen per jaar. Onze zomermaanden zijn goede maanden om het land te bezoeken; het is daar dan winter en de temperaturen lopen niet zo hoog op (gemiddeld 20 tot 25 'C). Neem voor de avonden warme kleding mee. Tijdens onze wintermaanden is het zomer in Namibië. De temperatuur kan dan oplopen tot meer dan 35 'C. Een zonnebril en zonnehoed zijn onmisbare attributen vanwege de vaak felle zon. Draag tijdens safari's geen kleurrijke kleding, dat schrikt de dieren af. Rond zonsondergang is het verstandig kleding met lange mouwen en een lange broek te dragen vanwege de insecten.
Hoe er te komen
Namibië is alleen per vliegtuig te bereiken. De internationale luchthaven is in de hoofdstad Windhoek. Ook vanuit Zuid-Afrika (Kaapstad en Johannesburg) is Namibië goed te bereiken. Een vliegretour Amsterdam-Windhoek is er vanaf € 850. Bij verschillende touroperators kun je flydrives en rondreizen per bus boeken. Het is ook mogelijk een rondreis per camper of per fourwheeldrive te maken. Er zijn enkele eenvoudige, maar sfeervolle campings.
Visum, vaccinaties en valuta
Een visum is niet nodig. Voor eventuele vaccinaties (afhankelijk van bestemming en seizoen) neemt u contact op met de plaatselijke GGD of met Travel Clinic (gespecialiseerd in advies over vaccinaties) tel. 0900-109 1096 (€ 0,45 plm). 1 Namibië dollar is ongeveer €0,10 waard. Het is aan te raden US dollars mee te nemen, zowel cash als in Travellers Cheques. Alleen in grote plaatsen, zoals Windhoek en Swakopmund, is het beperkt mogelijk te pinnen. Neem vooraf contact op met uw bank.

Entry Requirements :
A valid passport is required to enter Namibia. Visas are needed except for nationals from Angola, Austria, Belgium, Botswana, Canada, Germany, Luxembourg, France, Italy, Ireland, Japan, Liechtenstein, Mozambiwue, the Netherlands, the Nordic Countries, Russia, Singapore, Malasia, Australia, New Zealand, Spain, Portugal, South-Africa, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Visas are obtained from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Private Bag 13200, Windhoek, at Namibian Embasssies and at Namibia Tourist Offices in Johannesburg and Cape Town.
Currency :
The unit of currency is the Namibia Dollar (N$) which has the same value as the S.A Rand and is divided into 100 cents. The South-African Rand is stii accepted as legal tender in Namibia. Travellers cheques are accepted almost everywhere. Those in foreign currencies must be cashed in at banks. In general credit cards are accepted by most hotels as well as in restcamps of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, where Master, Visa, Diners Club cards, Namibia Dollars and Rand travellers cheques and bank guaranteed cheques are also acceptable.
Health :
All water from taps is purified and visitors need have no hesitation in drinking it. Travellers to the northern parts are advised to take anti-malaria precautions, especially in summer.
What to Pack :
Winter days are mild to warm, so you should bring light summer clothes. Nights can be quite chilly - even in summer at the coast. Warm clothes are thus also necessary. A good pair of sunglasses, sunscreen, lip balm, a sun hat,swimming costume, camera and flash or video camera are all standard equipment and can be boughr in all large centres. All international-standard videotapes are available in Windhoek, as well as one hour film processing services.
Traffic Rules and Regulation :
Remember to drive on the left hand side of the road in Namibia. There is a general speed limit of 120 km/h on open roads (although it is recommended you reduce speed on gravel roads). Safety belts must be worn.
Overseas visitors (not residents of neighbouring countries) must be in possesion of a valid international drivers licence if they plan to hire or drive a vehicle in this country.
Road signs are internationally recognised symbols, and road and turnoffs are clearly signposted. Road signs warning against animals, particularly kudu, should be taken seriously, especially at night when they are blinded by headlights.
Car Hire :
Cars and four wheel drive vehicles can be hired in Windhoek, Tsumeb, Walvis Bay and Swakopmund, and also at the Windhoek Airport.
Hunting and Hunting Safaris :
While Namibia is a popular area for overseas hunters, hunting laws are very strict, in order to enforce the sustainable utilization of this valuable resource. No one may hunt or kill an animal without permission.
The hunting season is in June and July, and written permission must be obtained from the farm owner, who has the right to decide what may be hunted and what to charge the hunter. Trophy hunters may hunt outside of season, except during January and December, and must have a permit from the directorate of nature Cobservation. Residents of namibia and South-Africa are restricted to normal hunting seasons. Trophy hunters must be accompanied by a professional hunter or a registered guide, and no handgun or bowhunting is allowed. Custom regulations allow for hunters to bring their own rifles, but no handguns, subject to certain limitations, into the country. These of course must be declared at the airport. Rifles can also be hired in Windhoek.
