Deze stad ligt aan de voet van de Serra de Santa Catarina. Hier ligt voor de Portugezen de wieg van het koninkrijk. Het was hier dat een afgezant van de Westgoten, de boer Wamba tot koning uitriep. Wamba stak een dode olijftak in de grond en zou het koningsschap aanvaarden als deze tak in bloei schoot. Dat gebeurde. Wamba vormde een leger en weerstond de Moren.
De burcht is een imponerend Romaanse vesting. In het midden staat het 27m hoge belfort. Hier kon men zijn laatste toevlucht nemen.  Via een ophaalbrug kan men er binnen komen. Er omheen ligt een wal met acht torens.
Naar beneden staat het paleis van de hertogen van Braganca. Het is een ridderslot in gotisch-Normandische stijl. Het is een bezoek zeker waard.
Verder naar beneden wandelend komen we langs het Carmo-klooster op een plein waar het paleis van justitie staat. Vlakbij staat het stadhuis uit de 16e eeuw.
Er tegenover staat de kapittelkerk met daarvoor een hal met het overwinningskruis. Het herinneringsteken aan de overwinning op de Moren. Er achter staat de massale toren van de Nossa Senhora da Oliveira
Largo da Republica do Brasil is een druk plein, met de kerk Santos Passos.
In via de Alameda da Resistencia vindt men op no. 80 de VVV en de 14e eeuwse Sao Franciscokerk. Tot slot komt men op het Largo de Toural, een plein met zwart-wit mozaïekplaveisel.

Guimarães
The city is famous for being the cradle of the Portuguese nationality.
The city is famous for being the cradle of the Portuguese nationality, for according to tradition it was here that D. Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, was born. Later, in 1139, on proclaiming himself King of Portugal after conquering several territories around the county of Portucale, which he had inherited from his father, he decided that this city should become the capital of the newly founded kingdom.
Guimarães is an old city
where tradition has been carefully preserved, as can be seen by simply taking a stroll around its narrow mediaeval streets and appreciating the many buildings in the historical centre that are decorated with statues. An application for this area to be classified as world heritage is currently being studied by UNESCO.
The mediaeval atmosphere that is distinctly felt in this city is further enhanced by the Festas Gualterianas, a festival that brings great life to its streets at the beginning of August.
In the surrounding area
is Citânia de Briteiros, an ancient settlement dating from the fourth century BC to the fourth century AD and containing some of the best preserved remains from the Iron Age in Portugal.
